College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Utah State senior Connor Coles kicked a career-best four field goals to secure the Aggies’ 26-24 Mountain West Conference defeat of Colorado State in Logan, Utah on Friday night. Coles’ kicks marked the final 12 points the team would score, turning a tie game into a 9-point lead with five minutes to play. The Bozeman, Mont. native connected from 45, 42, 34 and 30 yards out. He added two extra points for a career-high 14-point game. In his first full season as the Utah State kicker, he is 12-for-17 on field goals to go with 20 PATs. His 56 points lead all Aggies in scoring.

Dario Longhetto made four field goals in California’s 26-3 thumping of Colorado in Pac-12 action in Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday. The Newbury Park, Calif. native scored from 51, 49, 33 and 30 yards, becoming the first Cal kicker to have four makes in a game since 2017. He has only nine attempts this season but has made seven of them. The junior added a pair of PATs and is perfect in 17 attempts this season. The 14-point game is the first double-digit performance of his career and brings his season total to 38, which leads all Golden Bear players.

Casey Legg’s perfect season may have come to an end, but the junior was a major part of the Mountaineers’ 29-17 road win over TCU in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday. The Charleston, W. Va. native made field goals of 49, 38 and 27 yards out to start the season with 13 straight makes before a blocked attempt in the fourth quarter. Even still, he has five straight multi-FG games and became the first West Virginia kicker with three in a game since 2019. He made both his extra point tries, bringing his season total there to 20-for-20. Among FBS kickers with at least 14 field goal attempts, only one has a better accuracy rate this season than his 92.9%.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
