College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.” Colorado State junior Cayden Camper made 5 of 6 field goal tries in the Rams’ 36-7 defeat of New Mexico in Mountain West Conference action on the road in Albuquerque on Saturday night. It is the third time this season the Pueblo, Colo. native has kicked at least 5 field goals in a game, including last week’s 6-FG performance. This time around he connected from 47, 46, 25 and twice from 21 yards to bring his season total to 17 makes and vault into the FBS lead. Camper added three extra points for an 18-point game which was the most by a kicker this weekend. His 64 points lead all CSU players in scoring. Freshman kicker Marshall Meeder kicked a 38-yard field goal to clinch Central Michigan’s 26-23 overtime defeat of Toledo in Mid-American Conference action in Mount Pleasant, Mich. on Saturday. It was his fourth field goal in as many attempts, joining makes from 51, 46 and 44 yards out. The Eaton Rapids, Mich. native has made his last seven attempts to bring his season totals to 11-for-16 after a 4-for-9 start to the season. He made both PAT tries for a 14-point day and is 23-for-23 on extra points the season to bring his scoring total to a team-leading 56 points. Iowa State senior Andrew Mevis booted four field goals to help the Cyclones defeat Kansas State 33-20 in a Big 12 game in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday. The Warsaw, Ind. native showed his power with makes from 44, 40, and twice from 41 yards out. He is 10-for-12 on field goals this season, with eight of those coming from at least 40 yards out, including a 54 yarder. He also made both his PAT attempts in the game to bring his season total to 11-for-11. His 14 points bring his season total to 41, which is second among all Iowa State players. The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
