College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.” It was a day of redemption for Colorado State kicker Cayden Camper as his five field goals led the Rams to a 22-6 victory on the road against Toledo on Saturday. It was a career best for Camper, who had missed his last three attempts coming into the game and finished it as the first Ram to kick five field goals in a game since 2002. The junior from Pueblo, Colo. scored from 47, 42, 31, 29 and 23 yards out. He also made his only extra point try of the day for a 16-point game. His 24 points tie him for the lead among Colorado State scorers. A career day for Duke sophomore Charlie Ham helped the Blue Devils to a 30-23 defeat of Northwestern in Durham, N.C. on Saturday. He made three field goals to tie his high mark in a game and his 50 yarder is a career-long. The Atlanta, Ga. native also had makes of 23 and 27 yards. He added three PATs for a 12-point game. Ham has made four of five field goal attempts in the young season and is perfect on 13 extra point tries. He is second among all Duke players with 25 points. ULM senior kicker Calum Sutherland scored all the points in the Warhawks’ 12-7 defeat of Jackson State in Monroe, La. on Saturday to give coach Terry Bowden his first victory with the program. Sutherland connected from 29, 42, 45 and a career-long 49 yards. The Keller, Texas native kicked four field goals in a game for the first time in his career and the first time for a ULM kicker since 2006. His season total on field goals improved to 5-for-7 and he has made his only extra point try this year. His 16 points lead all ULM players in scoring after two games. The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
