College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

2017 Lou Groza Award finalist Dominik Eberle moved into second among all FBS players in scoring with his 19-point performance in Utah State’s 61-19 blowout of New Mexico in Mountain West Conference action in Logan, Utah on Saturday. He has scored 92 points on the season. The junior from Nuremberg, Germany made field goals of 34, 28, 27 and 18 yards to bring his season total to 15 which ties him for fourth in the nation. He also made all seven of his extra point attempts to stay perfect on PATs throughout his career.

Sophomore Alex Kessman’s 14 points were more than the difference in Pitt’s 54-45 victory over Duke in Pittsburgh on Saturday. The native of Clarkston, Michigan connected from 54, 48 and 27 yards out, including a kick to tie the game with just over two minutes left. The 54 yarder was the fifth from long range in his brief career, already the most ever by a Pitt kicker. He added five PATs. Kessman’s 46 points lead all Panthers players in scoring.

Syracuse football is ranked for the first time in 17 years, in no small part thanks to the nation’s leading scorer in freshman kicker Andre Szmyt. The Vernon Hills, Illinois native went 3-for-3 to help lead the Orange to a 51-41 home win over NC State in ACC action. He connected from 45, 41 and 29 yards to set a new Orange single-season mark with 21 field goals, tied for the most in FBS. He made six PATs for a 15-point day to bring his season scoring total to 103 points, the most by any player at any position in FBS.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
