College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Cameron Dicker booted the most important field goal of his brief career Saturday when he connected from 40 yards out with nine seconds remaining to give Texas a 48-45 victory over Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Dicker earned his second Stars of the Week selection with the winner in one of football’s biggest rivalry games, knocking off a top-ten team that had just erased a three-score deficit. The true freshman from Austin, Texas kicked a 44-yard field goal earlier, and added 6 PATs for a 12-point game to bring his season total to a team-leading 44 points.

2017 Lou Groza Award winner Matt Gay kicked four field goals to help Utah to a 40-21 victory over 14th ranked Stanford in Palo Alto, California on Saturday. The Orem, Utah native went 4-for-4 on field goals in a game for the third time in his two-year career, with makes of 49, 48, 37 and 34 yards. He added four extra points for a 16-point game, which bring his season total to 39, second among all scorers on the squad.

Missouri kicker Tucker McCann turned in a career-best performance on Saturday, but despite his five field goals the Tigers lost a 37-35 road matchup to South Carolina in SEC action. It was the first time in his career the junior from O’Fallon, Illinois has made 5 kicks in a single game. He showed his strong leg with a 57-yard boot, plus kicks from 44, 32 and a pair from 22 yards. The 57 yarder is the second-longest in Mizzou history, and the longest by an FBS kicker this season. McCann added two PATs for a 17-point game. His 58 points lead all Tigers in scoring, and place him fifth among FBS kickers, while his 13 field goals are second in the nation.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
