College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Mizzou football is still undefeated thanks to kicker Tucker McCann’s 25-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tigers a 40-37 road victory over Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday. The junior from O’Fallon, Ill. was 4-for-5 on field goals with makes of 40, 31 and 29 yards in addition to the game-winner. His lone miss was blocked from 50 yards out. He added four PATs for a 16-point game. With eight field goals on the season, McGann is tied for second in the nation.

Chase McLaughlin became the first kicker in Illinois history to make 50-yard field goals in three straight games, part of a four field goal performance, in a 25-19 loss to South Florida at Soldier Field in Chicago. This week his long-distance kick came from 53 yards out, in addition to makes from 46, 41 and 26 yards. The senior from Cypress, Texas also made his lone extra point try for a 13-point game. That gives him 30 points on the season, placing him in the top-ten among FBS kickers, while his three long-distance kicks are tied for the most in the nation.

Cole Tracy’s 42-yard buzzer-beater has earned him his second Star of the Week selection in the first three weeks of the season. The kick gave LSU a 22-21 upset victory over Auburn in the Tiger-versus-Tiger matchup on the road in Auburn, Alabama on Saturday. The senior from Camarillo, California made three of his four field goal tries on the day, with the lone miss coming from 53 yards away. His other makes were from 33 and 27 yards, and he made his only extra point of the game. Tracy, who led Division II in field goals last year, is now tied for second in FBS this season with 8 makes.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
