College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Wyatt Bryan kicked a career-long 55-yard field goal to open the scoring in Colorado State’s 34-27 upset of Arkansas in Fort Collins, CO on Saturday. The senior from Larkspur, CO added makes of 46, 44 and 22 yards, making four FGs in a game for the first time in his career. A Groza semifinalist in 2017, he added two PATs for a 14-point performance that moved his career total to an even 300 and make him the all-time leading scorer in Colorado State history.

Dominik Eberle proved that last year’s Groza finalist designation was no fluke, going 6-for-6 on field goals as part of an NCAA record-tying 24-point performance in Utah State’s 60-13 win over New Mexico State in Logan, Utah on Saturday. The kicks weren’t chip shots, either, as the junior from Nuremberg, Germany tied another NCAA record with three field goals from at least 50 yards, becoming just the sixth kicker in history to do so. All three came from 51 yards out, joined by kicks from 44, 32 and 21 yards to set the school record for makes in a single game. He matched his 6-for-6 field goal total with the same mark on extra point attempts to match the single-game kick-scoring record set back in 1984.

James Sherman tied the all-time Texas State record with five field goals in Saturday’s 36-20 defeat of Texas Southern in San Marcos, Texas. He was 5-for-6 in the game with the lone miss from 50 yards out. The senior from Montgomery, AL had a pair of makes from 41 yards to go along with conversions from 36, 35 and 23 yards out. He added three extra points for an 18-point game which tied the school record for kick-scoring in a game.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
