College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Florida State depended on some clutch kicking by sophomore Ricky Aguayo for Saturday’s 26-19 victory over Wake Forrest in Winston Salem, NC.  The win snapped a season opening 2 game losing streak for FSU.  The Mascotte, FL native made field goals of 51, 27, 37 and 35 yards.  The last one brought the Seminoles from behind to tie the game 19-19 late in the fourth quarter. Aguayo added 2 PATs for a 14 point day.  He has made 8 of his 10 field goal attempts so far this season, all four extra point tries and his 28 points lead FSU in scoring.

Senior kicker Matthew McCrane made four field goals and three extra points for a career high 15 point day as Kansas State defeated Baylor 33-20 to open Big 12 action, Saturday afternoon at Manhatten, KS.  The Brownwood, TX native tied his career single game field goal mark with makes of 37, 21, 49 and 28 yards.  He added 3 extra points.  Only 4 Wildcat kickers including former Lou Groza Award winner Martin Gramatica have scored more than 15 points in a game.  His 41 points lead all KSU players in scoring.

Washington State red shirt senior Erik Powell hit a 32 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter which proved to be the game winner in the undefeated Cougars’ 30-27 nail biter over Southern California in PAC 12 action at Pullman, WA on Friday night.  The Vancouver, WA native also had makes of 44 and 33 yards and added 3 PATs for a 12 point game to bring his season scoring total to 49 points which lead all WSU scorers and rank him fifth in the FBS among kick scorers.  He is now 8 of 9 on field goals for the season and has not missed an extra point in 17 attempts.  His 39 career field goals rank him fifth in Cougar history.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
