College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.” This week’s Stars were selected from among the 20 semifinalists.

Two-time Groza finalist Daniel Carlson added to his expanding career records, making four field goals in Auburn’s 40-17 upset of top-ranked Georgia in a crucial SEC contest. With field goals of 54, 30 and twice from 37 yards, the senior from Colorado Springs, CO brought his career mark to 88, extending his Tigers record and moving into first place all-time in the SEC. He made all four of his PAT attempts, extending his career-long streak to 185 without a miss which is a new school record. Carlson scored 16 points to bring his season total to 102 points, ranking him second in FBS kick-scoring.

Washington State senior Erik Powell contributed fifteen points to the Cougars’ 33-25 defeat of Utah in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. The victory has WSU just one win shy of the Pac-12 North title and a berth in the conference championship game. Powell made field goals of 44, 33, 32 and 28 yards and added three PATs. It was the Vancouver, WA native’s second 4-FG game of the year and brings his totals to 19-for-23 this season. The 19 kicks tie him for fifth in FBS and bring his career total to 50, third-most in school history. He has scored 99 points to lead all Cougars and place him fourth among FBS kickers in scoring.

Sophomore Jet Toner is a Star of the Week selection for the second time this season after his performance in Stanford’s 30-22 victory over Washington on Friday night in Palo Alto, putting a dent in the Huskies’ Pac-12 championship hopes. The Honolulu, HI native connected from 38, 32 and 31 yards and made his three extra point attempts. He is 18-for-21 on field goals and has not missed an extra point try in 39 attempts. The 18 makes tie him for 8th in FBS, and his 85.7% accuracy rate is tied for second among kickers with that many field goals. His 93 points lead all Cardinal players in scoring and place him ninth among FBS kickers.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
