This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, college football’s top kicking award presented by the Orange Bowl. Each week the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Pitt kicker Chris Blewitt’s 31-yard field goal as time expired gave the Panthers a 37-34 come-from-behind victory over Georgia Tech in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday. The senior from Alexandria, VA also had makes of 34 and 41 yards to take his career total to 52 field goals, the most in school history. It was the second time in his career that he has kicked a winner with no time remaining. Blewitt made all four of his PAT tries for a 13-point performance, giving him a team-leading 48 points for the season.

Zane Gonzalez rewrote the FBS record book by kicking three field goals in Arizona State’s 23-20 defeat of UCLA in Tempe, AZ on Saturday. With his 46 yarder in the fourth quarter, the two-time Groza Award semifinalist set the new NCAA mark for career field goals made at 89. The record-breaking kick would also prove to be the difference in the game. The senior from Deer Park, TX also scored from 35 and 23 yards out and added a pair of extra points. Gonzalez has made an FBS-best 16 of his 17 field goals this season, while his 72 points are the most by any kicker and second among all players in the country.

2015 Groza Award semifinalist Austin Rehkow beat the clock with a 27-yard field goal to give Idaho a 34-31 win over Louisiana Monroe in Sun Belt Conference action in Monroe, LA on Saturday. Despite a four-year career that has him second in the Vandals record book for field goals, it was his first game-winner. The senior from Veradale, WA also connected on field goals of 34, 32, and 28 yards and tacked on two extra points to bring his season total to a team-best 46 points. Rehkow has made 12 of his 14 field goal attempts which ties him for fifth among all FBS kickers.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
