This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, college football’s top kicking award presented by the Orange Bowl. Each week the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

An offensive shootout came down to the coolness of BYU kicker Rhett Almond as the Cougars came from behind to defeat Toledo 55-53 in Provo, UT on Friday. With the game on the line, the sophomore from Valencia, CA made a 19-yard game-winner with three seconds to play. Almond made a 32 yarder earlier in the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 45-45. He was also perfect in his seven extra point tries for a 13-point game. Almond, who has shared the kicking chores, is 5-for-5 on field goals this season.

Penn State junior Tyler Davis set a new school record for consecutive field goals with his 3-for-3 performance in the Nittany Lions’ 29-26 overtime defeat of Minnesota in Big Ten action in College Station, PA on Saturday night. The St. Charles, IL native made kicks from 40, 27 and 19 yards to extend his streak to 17, dating back to last season. His 11-point game is also a career mark. He is 9-for-9 on field goals this season, tied for the most without a miss in FBS, and has made all 14 extra point attempts for 41 points, second among all team scorers.

North Carolina senior kicker Nick Weiler came through when it mattered with the longest and perhaps most important field goal of his career, a 54-yard bomb as time expired to give the Tar Heels a 37-35 upset of Florida State in ACC action in Tallahassee, FL on Saturday. He had an extra point blocked just minutes earlier and had missed a 51 yard try, but came through with everything on the line to snap FSU’s 22-game home winning streak. The 54-yard make is the second longest in UNC history. The 2015 Groza semifinalist from Fairfax Station, VA was successful on four other extra point tries. His 40 points are second among all Tar Heel players.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
