College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Tigers coach Gus Malzahn had good reason to call Daniel Carlson the best kicker in college football after the junior from Colorado Springs, CO kicked six field goals to provide all the scoring in the Auburn’s 18-13 defeat of LSU in Auburn, AL on Saturday night. Carlson, a 2015 Groza Award finalist, connected from 51, 37, 31 and three times from 29 yards to break his career record and tie the school mark for field goals in a game. He is 12-for-12 on the season and has made 29 of his last 30 field goals. His 50 points lead all Tigers in scoring and rank him fourth among FBS kickers.

Tulane kicker Andrew DiRocco’s career-long 48-yard field goal provided the Green Wave an opportunity to defeat Louisiana Lafayette 41-39 in the fourth overtime of AAC action in New Orleans, LA on Saturday. The junior from Ft. Lauderdale, FL also connected from 35, 22, and 20 yards out for his first career four-field-goal game, which makes him the first Tulane kicker to accomplish that since former Lou Groza Award winner Cairo Santos in 2013. DiRocco added three PATs for a 15-point game, and now leads all Green Wave players with 31 points.

Arizona State kicker Zane Gonzalez earned Star of the Week recognition for a second consecutive week by scoring fifteen points in the Sun Devils’ 51-41 come-from-behind defeat of Cal in Tempe, AZ on Saturday night. The senior from Deer Park, TX made field goals of 44, 35 and 23 yards and was perfect on all six of his extra point tries. He is 11-of-12 on field goals this season which ties him for third nationally. It also gives Gonzalez 84 for his career, the fourth most in FBS history and just five away from the all-time record. His 53 points lead all Sun Devils in scoring and lead all FBS kickers.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
