College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta, GA on Thursday, December 10th. The three finalists will be honored at the 24th Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Monday, December 7 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, FL. For more information on the Lou Groza Award and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission visit www.LouGrozaAward.com.

It will go down certainly as one of the most bizarre game endings of the season and Georgia Tech relied on the strong leg of junior place kicker Harrison Butker to provide ten crucial points in Saturday’s 22-16 upset of undefeated Florida State at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, GA.  The Decatur, GA native tied the game at 3-3 when he tied his career best with a 53 yard field goal in the first quarter and also connected from 40 and 35 yards out. He added the extra point on the Yellow Jackets lone TD. He is perfect on 34 extra point attempts this season and his 55 points lead all “Wramblin Wreck” scorers.

Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked the longest field goal in UCLA history and the longest in the FBS this season in the Bruins’ 40-24 defeat of Cal Berkeley in Pasadena, CA last Thursday. The senior from Kailua, HI launched a 60 yard missile as time expired to end the first half after connecting from 44, 29 and 30 yards earlier in the game. The 60-yarder was tied for the second longest field goal ever by a conference player, behind only Jason Hanson of Washington State who booted a 62-yard field goal v. UNLV in 1991. Fairbairn has made 13 of his 14 field goal attempts this season. He has made 37 straight field goals from 35 yards and in and 22 of his last 24 attempts overall.  In addition, seven of his eight kickoffs against Cal went for touchbacks and the lone return was for 14 yards. His 67 points lead all Bruin scorers and place him in the top ten nationally in scoring by kickers.

University of Nevada junior Brent Zuzo was the first half star in the Wolf Pack’s 30-20 homecoming defeat of the University of Hawaii in Mountain West Conference action in Reno, NV on Saturday. With under two minutes remaining in the half, Zuzo recovered his own onside kick, which set up his 40-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining to pull Nevada within 17-10.  He also scored from 29 and 30 yards and added 3 extra points as well. The Canton, MI native is 10 of 11 on field goals this season and has made all 25 extra point tries.  His 55 points give him the lead in team scoring.
