College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta, GA on Thursday, December 10th. The three finalists will be honored at the 24th Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Monday, December 7 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, FL. For more information on the Lou Groza Award and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission visit www.LouGrozaAward.com.

College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division (Div 1A) teams as the “Stars of the Week”.

A career-best performance for sophomore kicker Michael Badgley was the difference in the University of Miami’s 36-33 defeat of Nebraska in Miami Gardens on Saturday night. The Summit, NJ native connected from 28 yards in overtime for the game-winner and also scored from 41, 28, 27 and 23 yards along with three extra points. The 5-for-5 field goal performance tied Miami’s all-time record. Badgley’s 41 points not only lead all Hurricanes players, but are the most by any kicker in the country, driven by his FBS-best 9 field goals.

Louisiana Tech sophomore Jonathan Barnes kicked a career-long 45 yard field goal as regulation time expired to force overtime against Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday but the Bulldogs fell short in a 39-33 loss. Barnes made a 32 yard try in the second overtime and also connected from 39 and 25 yards earlier in the game. He added three extra points for a 15-point day. The Baton Rouge, LA native has made 7 of his 8 field goal tries this season and is 16-for-16 on extra point attempts. He leads all Bulldog scorers with 37 points, good for second in the nation in kick-scoring.

It is rare that two “Stars of the Week” come from the same game but that is the case as Kansas State’s Jack Cantele equaled Jonathan Barnes’ 15-point performance in the Wildcats’ 39-33 triple-overtime defeat of Louisiana Tech in Manhattan, KS. on Saturday.  Cantele matched his career-long with a 44 yard field goal in the second overtime to keep the Wildcats alive in the game. He also had makes of 38, 33 and 20 yards as well as three PATs. The senior from Wichita is now 7-for-7 on field goals for the season, tying him for the most by any kicker still perfect on the year.
