College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Sophomore kicker Zane Gonzalez kicked four field goals and his 14 points were crucial to Arizona State’s 26-10 victory over Stanford in Tempe on Saturday.  The Sun Devils improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12 South to keep them in the race for a spot in the conference championship game.  The Deer Park, Texas native scored from 47, 31, 25 and 25 yards out after missing a first quarter try from 48 yards.  He has made 9 of 11 field goals this season with both misses from longer than 40 yards.  Gonzalez, a 2013 Groza Award semifinalist as a freshman, added two PATs to bring his season total to 50 points, which leads the team in scoring.

Sophomore kicker Andy Phillips earned his second Star of the Week selection of the season with his 3 field goal performance in Utah’s 29-23 double overtime defeat of Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. on Thursday. The win keeps the Utes in the thick of the Pac-12 championship race. The Draper, Utah native connected from 46, 43 and 38 yards out to improve his season total to 13 of 15 field goals made.  He is 9 of 11 from 40 yards or more, the second most makes from that distance in the nation. Phillips added two extra points and is perfect in 26 PAT tries.  His 65 points lead the Utes in scoring and place him among the national leaders in kick-scoring.

Scott Secor’s career-long 55 yard field goal with seventeen seconds left lifted Ball State to a 32-29 defeat of Central Michigan in Mid-American Conference action in Mount Pleasant, Mich. on Saturday. Secor, a senior from New Lennox, Ill. also connected from 39, 37 and 20 yards to match a career-best four field goal game.  He added two extra points for a season total of 66, leading all Cardinal scorers and placing him fifth nationally in scoring by kickers. His 16 field goals made tie him for second in the nation, while the 55 yard field goal is the third-longest in the nation so far this season.

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday, December 11th.
