Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week 9/11/06

Justin Medlock of UCLA, Garrett Hartley of Oklahoma, and Brandon Coutu of Georgia are this week’s Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Stars of the Week.

Senior Justin Medlock went a perfect 4 for 4 in UCLA’s win against Rice. Medlock connected from 32, 34, 37, and 51 yards in the game. The four field goals tie a career best for Medlock. The 51 yard field goal makes Medlock UCLA’s all-time leader with field goals over 50 yards with 5.

Garrett Hartley went 3 for 3 in field goals and accounted for 13 of Oklahoma’s points in their 37-20 win against Washington. Hartley made kicks from 30, 37, and 44 yards. He also connected on all four of his extra point attempts.

Georgia kicker Brandon Coutu split the uprights on field goals from 42, 46, and 46 to go a perfect 3 for 3 in their 18-0 win over South Carolina. Coutu also connected on his one extra point attempt to account for 10 of Georgia’s total points.

The 2006 winner of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl and is announced on Thursday, December 7, 2006 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in Orlando, Florida. The top three finalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award are honored during the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet and Silent Auction on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. This is an event of the Palm Beach County Sports Institute.

All Division I-A kickers are eligible for the Award named for NFL Hall-of-Fame Kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza. Voters for the award include Division I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference representatives, professional kickers, and previous Groza Award finalists.
