Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week 10/23/06

This week’s Lou Groza Award Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Stars of the Week are Dan Ennis of the University of Maryland, Brett Swenson of Michigan State University, and Andrew Wellock of Eastern Michigan University. All three kickers played decisive roles in their teams’ victories over the weekend.

Dan Ennis, University of Maryland, had a perfect game on Saturday for the Terrapins in their 26-20 victory over North Carolina State. Ennis was 4 for 4 in field goals, connecting from 19, 27, 32, and 40-yards. Ennis was also a perfect 2 for 2 in extra points on the afternoon. All together Ennis accounted for 14 of Maryland’s total points.

Brett Swenson, Michigan State University, capped off the greatest comeback in Division 1-A history with a game winning 28-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining to give the Spartans a 41-38 victory over Northwestern. The field goal finished off an amazing come from behind victory after a 35-point deficit in the third quarter. Swenson also added a field goal from 32-yards and five extra points in the stunning victory.

Andrew Wellock, Eastern Michigan University, went a perfect 3 for 3 in field goals in helping lead the Eagles to their first win of the season. Wellock hit field goals from 38, 43, and 48-yards in Eastern Michigan’s 17-13 victory over Toledo. Wellock, the runner-up for the 2004 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, accounted for 9 of Eastern Michigan’s total points.

The 2006 winner of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl and is announced on Thursday, December 7, 2006 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in Orlando, Florida. The top three finalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award are honored during the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet and Silent Auction on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. This is an event of the Palm Beach County Sports Institute.

All Division I-A kickers are eligible for the Award named for NFL Hall of Fame Kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza. Voters for the award include Division I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference representatives, professional kickers, and previous Groza Award finalists.
