Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week

Joel Howells of Northwestern, Mason Crosby of Colorado, and Kyle Schlicher of Iowa are this week’s Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Top Three Stars for the Week.

Joel Howells set a Northwestern record with five field goals, including a 46-yarder that tied his career-best.  His other field goals were from 20, 25, 42, and 25.  The lead changed three times in the closing minutes, Penn State took its first lead, 27-26, with 8:52 left in the game. Howells followed with his final 25-yard field goal to regain the lead with 2:10 left.  Howells also had two extra points in the game, giving him a total of 17 points scored in the game.

Mason Crosby makes his second appearance on the 2005 Lou Groza Award Stars for the Week.  When Crosby pounded a 58-yard field goal through the goal posts in the fourth quarter, the ball appeared to be headed for the upper deck. Crosby’s lone field goal provided the only Colorado points in the game and prevented a shutout by Miami, keeping intact the Buffaloes’ 200 consecutive games scoring streak.

Kyle Schlicher currently holds a field goal percentage of 100 and an extra point percentage of 100 for the season.  Schlicher connected on two field goals in Iowa’s game against Ohio State.  His field goals from 52 yards in the third quarter and 37 yards in the fourth quarter were the only points scored in the game.
