FINALISTS NAMED FOR OUTSTANDING PALM BEACH COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER, KICKER, COACH

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2003 Palm Beach County High School Football Awards, which honor the top player, place-kicker, and coach in Palm Beach County. The winners will be announced as part of the 2003 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. The award is presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl on December 9, 2003 at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl.

The finalists for the Palm Beach County High School Football Awards are:

2003 OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Albert Dukes – Glades Central

Omar Haugabook – Glades Central

Larry Taylor – Glades Day

2003 OUTSTANDING PLACE-KICKER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Tony Ciaravino – Boca Raton

Griffin Karr – Pope John Paul II

Jonathan Phillips – Wellington

2002 SAM BUDNYK OUTSTANDING COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD

Larry Coffey – Glades Central

Rick Swain – Boca Raton

Tim Tharp – Palm Beach Gardens

The finalists were nominated by Palm Beach County high school football head coaches and Palm Beach County media representatives. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission will donate a check for $1,000 to the athletic department of each of the winning schools.

The Lou Groza Award, now in its 12th year, is named for NFL Hall-of-Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Nicknamed “The Toe,” Groza was one of the first people to truly make kicking an art form, and he helped usher in to football the idea that a player could be used exclusively for kicking.

Tickets for the 2003 Lou Groza Award Banquet are currently on sale for $65 for members, $75 for non-members, and $35 for students 18 years old and under.
