The Palm Beach County Sports
Commission established the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker
Award in 1992. The award is presented each December to the
nation's top Division I college place-kicker as determined
by a national voting panel comprised of all Division I head
coaches, sports writers and sportscasters from across the
country, conference officials, various NFL kickers, and all
previous Groza Award finalists.
The award is named in honor
of Lou Groza, who was a long-time star of the Cleveland Browns.
Groza, who was also a standout tackle before suffering a back
injury, quickly earned the nickname of "The Toe"
because of his kicking proficiency. As a result of his deadly
field goal accuracy, he is regarded as the first kicker to
be truly considered an offensive weapon. He transformed the
art of kicking into the specialty it is today. Groza played
21 seasons for the Browns and led the NFL in field goals five
times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
in 1974.
