Palm Beach County Sports Commission Presents

Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award

Palm Beach Sports

During the past 20 years, many things have helped mold college football into the game that it is today. Near the top of that list is the increased importance of the kicking game.

It used to be that place-kickers were local, non-scholarship athletes who made good. Now, top high school and prep kickers are as highly recruited as some quarterbacks and wide receivers.

With national championships often won or lost on one swing of the leg, the importance of having a top kicker cannot be understated.

The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award annually recognizes college football’s top place-kicker.

Arizona State Kicker Zane Gonzalez Wins the Lou Groza Award

During the Home Depot College Football Awards, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Arizona State University senior Zane Gonzalez as the winner of the 2016 National Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award.

"I’d like to thank the Palm Beach County Sports Commission for this honor,” said Gonzalez. “I am proud to be nominated this year along with Daniel and Younghoe, two very talented kickers. I’m so honored and appreciative of this award.”

Gonzalez capped an unparalleled college career with an exclamation point of a season in which no kick – and no record – seemed out of his range. The senior finishes his four-year career as the all-time FBS leader in both made field goals and points by a kicker. This year, his 23-for-25 season is fourth in the nation in made field goals and second in accuracy by kickers with at least 20 makes. Those kicks have come from an average of 40.9 yards away, hitting a national-best 13 from at least 40 yards and a remarkable 7-for-9 from over 50. That mark, the second-most ever from long distance in an FBS season, includes the longest field goal of the year, a 59 yarder that was also the kick to give him the all-time record for career points by a kicker. That game against Colorado stands as one of the most impressive ever by a kicker at any level, as all three of his kicks came from beyond 50 yards, tying the FBS mark for most long distance kicks in one game. Only one other kicker this year had more 50-yard field goals all season as Gonzalez hit in that one game. His only two misses of the year also came from long distance, both on 53-yard attempts. From every other distance, including three attempts that were even longer, he stayed perfect, finishing his illustrious career with his best season ever.

Gonzalez beat out Auburn junior Daniel Carlson and Georgia Southern senior Younghoe Koo for the award. Carlson finished tied for the national lead with 26 field goals, a new Auburn record. Koo became the first Georgia Southern finalist for an FBS award on the strength of a 19-for-20 season.

Gonzalez is the second Arizona State kicker to win the Groza in the award’s 25 years, joining 2007 recipient Thomas Weber. The national panel of voters is comprised of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers. Since the first Lou Groza Award was handed out in 1992, 21 finalists, including 12 winners, have gone on to appear in the NFL, earning nine trips to the Pro Bowl and taking home five Super Bowls.
