College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicker Award sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division (Div 1A) teams as the “Stars of the Week”.

Miami of Ohio senior Trevor Cook turned in a career best performance with four field goals in the Red Hawks 34-12 loss to the highly favored Florida Gators at Gainesville last Saturday. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native connected from 33, 31,31 and 33 yards in a game that was closer than the score indicated. The Red Hawks trailed by only nine points late in the fourth quarter. He holds the school record with a 55 yard field goal and kicked a 56 yarder in high school.

It was a record setting performance for Temple University sophomore Brandon McManus who connected on his career high fourth field goal of the game, a 43-yarder with three seconds remaining to clinch the Owls 31-24 victory over Villanova in the annual Philadelphia Mayor’s Cup game. The Owls recovered a fumble on the kickoff and ran it in for the icing on the cake. McManus also connected from 53 (career high), 44 and 40 yards for his career best game.

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno began his 45th season as head coach of the Nittany Lions with a 44-14 defeat of Youngstown State at State College.   Senior placekicker Collin Wagner had a big day, connecting on field goals of 44, 49 and 48 yards. His 49-yarder in the second quarter was a career-long, surpassing his 47-yard effort in the win over Minnesota last year. The State College, Pennsylvania native has made his last 7 field goal attempts going back to last season. He was 4 of 4 vs. LSU in the 2010 Capital One Bowl, including the game-winner in the final minute.

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Florida on Thursday December 9th. The three finalists will be feted at the 19th Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Tuesday December 7th at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. For more information on the Groza Award and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, visit www.palmbeachsports.com
