College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

Kicking off rain-soaked turf, Cole Murphy accounted for 13 of the 19 points Syracuse scored in a 27-19 loss to undefeated Miami in ACC action in Miami Gardens, FL on Saturday. The senior from Castaic, CA made field goals of 53, 45, 40 and 22 yards. Murphy’s 53-yarder was a career-long and the fourth time he has split the uprights from at least 50 yards out. He is tied for second in FBS with 16 makes this season, bringing his career total to 55, two shy of the team’s all-time mark. His 71 points lead the Orange in scoring and tie him for seventh in FBS kick scoring.

Junior kicker Parker Shaunfield made a career-long 49-yard field goal with 1:23 left in regulation and followed it with a successful onside kick to open the door for a Southern Miss 34-27 double overtime comeback victory over Louisiana Tech in C-USA action at Ruston, LA on Saturday. The Aledo, TX native also connected from 45, 34 and 26 yards for the first 4-FG game of his career. He has made 8 of the 10 field goals he has attempted this season. He added two extra points to bring his total to 25-for-25 this season and extend his Golden Eagle record to 87 consecutive PATs. His 49 points lead all Southern Miss players in scoring.

It was a happy homecoming for Jake Verity and the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday as they defeated BYU 33-17 in Greenville, NC. Verity, a sophomore from Bremen, GA, connected twice from 42 yards and also from 33 and 32 yards out. The four makes tied the East Carolina record.  He added three extra points for a career-high 15-point game. Verity has made 11 field goals on the season and 22 PATs to bring his total to 55 points on the season, which leads all Pirate scorers.

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
