Lou Groza National Collegiate Place Kicker Award
Announces Top 20 Semi-Finalists

West Palm Beach, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sports Commission has released the 20 semifinalists for the 2012 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl Committee. These twenty kickers have all excelled throughout the season in earning their places as semifinalists.

Eight of this year’s semifinalists repeat the honor from last season, including 2011 finalists Dustin Hopkins of Florida State and Caleb Sturgis of Florida. This year, Hopkins leads all kickers in scoring with 103 points, the third-highest total of any player in the nation. Sturgis is 3-for-3 on kicks from beyond 50 yards, tied for the national lead.

Among the new semifinalists is Ball State senior Steven Schott, whose 20 field goals are the most in the nation, while returning semifinalist Quinn Sharp’s 18 field goals in 8 games give him an FBS-leading 2.25 per game for Oklahoma State. The only semifinalist yet to miss a kick this season is Alabama senior Jeremy Shelley. The returning semifinalist is a perfect 9-for-9 on field goals and 43-for-43 on extra points.

Two new semifinalists are also perfect on field goal tries, with San Jose State freshman Austin Lopez going 13-for-13 and Tulane junior Cairo Santos 14-for-14. With nine of those from at least 40 yards out, Santos leads the nation in kicks from long distance, including a 57-yarder that matches Rice’s Chris Boswell for the longest among semifinalists. Lopez is joined by two other true freshmen in Duke’s Ross Martin and TCU’s Jaden Oberkrom.

Semifinalists will be voted on by FBS Head Coaches and SIDs, along with national and regional football writers, and past Groza winners to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on November 19th and honored at the 21st annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Banquet on December 4th in West Palm Beach, Florida. The winner will be announced live on the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show on Thursday, December 6th.

The award is named in honor of one of the all-time great kickers in football history, Lou Groza. Groza played 21 seasons for the Cleveland Browns setting numerous franchise records, including most games played, most points scored, and an amazing 107 consecutive games in which he scored a point. Groza was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

Past Groza finalists include current NFL kickers Sebastian Janikowski, Nate Kaeding, Mike Nugent, Mason Crosby, Garrett Hartley, Kai Forbath, Blair Walsh, Dan Bailey and Randy Bullock.
