College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

A career night for junior kicker Derrick Brodus helped the University of Tennessee to a 47-26 victory over the University of Akron in Knoxville on Saturday. The Maryville, Tenn. native was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, his first attempts since being named the team’s starting kicker two weeks ago. Brodus also converted all five extra point tries to bring his scoring total to 17 points, tying the Volunteers’ single-game record. He connected from a career-long 37 yards as well as from 28, 23 and 22 yards. It was a contest dominated by the kicking game as Brodus’ counterpart Robert Stein was also 4-for-4 for Akron.

Senior Trey Farquhar booted a 53-yard field goal in the University of Idaho’s heartbreaking 40-37 overtime loss to the University of Wyoming at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho on Saturday. He has been successful from 50 yards or longer seven times in his career, setting a Vandals record. The Redlands, Calif. native also connected from 49 and 26 yards and tacked on four extra points to bring his season total to 25 points, which leads the Vandals in scoring. He has hit six of his seven field goal tries this season and all nine of his PAT attempts.

Time was running out and Central Michigan University put Saturday’s fate on the consistent leg of senior kicker David Harman, who connected from a career-long 47 yards with three seconds to spare in the Chippewas’ 32-31 upset of the University of Iowa on the road in Iowa City. The Traverse City, Mich. native also converted kicks of 33, 25 and 20 yards on a perfect day which also included two extra points. Harman has yet to miss a kick of any kind this season, going 5-for-5 on field goals and 8-for-8 on PATs for a season total of 23 points, second on the team. The win was the Chippewas’ first over Iowa in school history and the first victory over a Big Ten opponent since they defeated Michigan State in 2009.

The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday, December 6th. The three finalists will be feted at the 21st Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 4th at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.
