College football’s top kicking award, the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week”.  This week, the performances of three of the twenty semi-finalists are highlighted.

There were few bright spots for the Rice Owls in a Thursday night loss to the University of Houston, but one of them was certainly sophomore kicker Chris Boswell.  The Keller, Texas native kicked a career long field goal of 51 yards and added another from 40 yards out as well as 4 PATs in the lopsided 73-34 loss at Houston’s Robertson Stadium.  Boswell leads the Owls with 58 points this season, including a career-high 12 field goals in 14 attempts.  He has also made all 22 of his extra point attempts.

Junior kicker Jack Griffin was the star of Florida International’s 23-20 overtime defeat of Troy University in Miami, Florida on Tuesday night.  Griffin kicked a game-tying 20-yarder with 3:31 remaining in regulation, and then booted the game-winner from 22 yards in the extra period.  The Naples, Florida native added a 32-yarder earlier in the game for his second consecutive three field goal performance.  Griffin leads the Golden Panthers in scoring with 68 points.  He is tied for second place nationally with 15 made field goals this season and has not missed an extra point in 23 attempts.

A badly sprained ankle did not prevent University of Southern California freshman Andre Heidari from answering the call against Stanford University.  Heidari tossed away his crutches to kick field goals from 50 and 22 yards and added six extra points in the Trojans’ 56-48 triple overtime loss to the 6th ranked Cardinal in Los Angeles on Saturday night.  The Bakersfield, California native has made 13 of his 15 field goal tries and is a perfect 28-for-28 on PATs.  His 67 points leads Trojan scoring.

The presentation of the Lou Groza Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.  The show, hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will feature the live presentation of nine player awards, along with the recipients of Disney’s Spirit Award; The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the NCFAA (National College Football Awards Association) Contributions to College Football Award; and student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team.  Fans can visit the show’s dedicated Web site at www.espncollegefootballawards.com to find the latest college football awards news, including show details, previous winners, fan voting, a photo gallery and video highlights.
